Do you look at your unmade bed every morning and just opt to walk away leaving it exactly how it was when you crawled out of it?
If so, I bet you own a duvet cover, right? The general idea of a duvet cover seems sound, because it allows you to easily interchange slipcovers.
The trouble is, the fabric on those slipcovers is prone to shrinking, stretching, clinging — or when it doesn’t cling — the clips, ties, snaps, etc. never hold up like they should. As a designer, I’ve seen anywhere from two to five inches of difference between the comforter and duvet size. Sometimes the two sides of the duvet are even different dimensions.
So when you make your bed, it looks like your dog is hiding under the covers, and the sides are wonky. This all results in you walking around the bed multiple times — tugging, smoothing, pulling and cursing. Sorry, but that big ol’ bump in the middle is never going to smooth out completely.
There’s an easy solution to this morning fiasco. Try using a bedspread instead. It eliminates trying to corral 18 yards (literally) of loose fabric into submission. If you really want a full look to your bedding, lay your comforter down first and add the bedspread on top of it.
Wala! You’ve got yourself a fluffy a bed that looks like it’s straight out of a four-star hotel, and you’ve saved yourself a lot of misery. If you already own a duvet you love, or have your eye on one you can’t live without, all is not lost! There are a few things you can do to make it more functional.
Pretend it’s a bedspread and don’t put the comforter in it. No brainer, right? This makes it easier on you in the morning, but the duvet will still shift, wrinkle and hang slightly uneven on the sides.
Another option is to make modifications to the duvet and turn it into a bedspread. It’s an easy DIY if you have a sewing machine, a little patience, and basic sewing skills.
I recently altered one for a customer and thought I would share a few tricks to save you a lot of aggravation should you decide to do it yourself. Check out the Workroom Hints Blog: "Convert a Duvet to a Bedspread" for more information.
So no more excuses to leave your bed unmade.....simplify your style, and your mornings, with a bedspread!
